Au moment de la colonisation de Kinburn (Mahone Bay) en 1754, les anglicans étaient desservis par des missionnaires venant de Lunenburg, premièrement dans des résidences privées et ensuite dans une école. Plusieurs paroissiens avaient l'habitude de marcher jusqu'à l'église St. John de Lunenburg, qui avait été construite en 1753, pour assister aux services religieux. Au début des années 1800, les paroissiens décidèrent de posséder leur propre église et ce désir fut transmis à un missionnaire voyageur en 1825. Une chapelle a été construite en 1833 sur une colline surplombant un cimetière.
Pendant les 11 premières années, l'église anglicane de Mahone Bay fut desservie par les recteurs de Lunenburg. Le premier missionnaire résident arriva en 1844. Le second de ceux-ci, le Rev. William Henry Snyder, qui servit en tant que tel de 1852 à 1858, fut nommé en tant que premier recteur et servit jusqu'à 1889. En 1858, la chapelle a été agrandie et un clocher fut ajouté au cours des années suivantes. L'église fut d'abord éclairée avec des lampes à l'huile puis au gas de carbone. En 1900, l'électricité fut installée dand l'église, le presbytère et la salle. L'édifice, telle qu'elle existe aujourd'hui, est de style renouveau gothique victorien. La salle paroissiale fut construite en 1895 avec des agrandissements réalisés en 1945 et 1985.
Au cours de l'été 1994, des travaux majeurs furent réalisés au clocher. Le 28 août 1994, l'église fut désignée « monument historique » et une plaque fut installée en reconnaissance de la valeur historique de l'édifice.

L'orgue
Le plus ancien document de la présence d'un organiste dans la nouvelle église St. James remonte à 1902, année où fut installé un orgue, alimenté manuellement en vent, construit par Casavant Frères, de St-Hyacinthe, au Québec. L'instrument a été complètement reconstruit en 1964 et restoré en 1995.

From the time of the settlement of Kinburn (Mahone Bay) area in 1754, the Anglicans were served by missionaries from Lunenburg, first in houses and then in a schoolhouse. Many adherents were in the habit of walking to services at St. John's in Lunenburg, which had been built in 1753. Early in the 1800s, the settlers began to talk about having their own church, and this desire was recorded by a travelling missionary in 1825. By 1833, a chapel had been constructed and consecrated on the hill above the burying grounds.
During the first 11 years of the Anglican church at Mahone Bay, the rectors of Lunenburg continued to minister to the congregation, whereupon the first resident missionary was appointed in 1844. The second of these, Rev. William Henry Snyder, who served as such from 1852 to 1858, was subsequently appointed as the first Rector, and served until 1889. In 1858, the chapel on the hill had been enlarged, and a tower was added in later years. When the time came in 1885 to erect the new church, the rector wanted to make it a replica of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem but the presence of Ned Harris as curate whose architect-brother, William C., was specialized in churches put an end to Snyder's dream. The present church was built and consecrated on September 27, 1887. The original church was sold in 1888, for $40.00, and demolished. The church was first lighted by oil lamps, and subsequently by carbon gas. In 1900, electricity was installed in the church, rectory and hall. The church building, as seen today, is of High Victorian Gothic Revival style. The parish hall was erected in 1895, with subsequent additions in 1945 and 1985.
During the summer of 1994, a major refurbishment of the steeple and tower was undertaken. On August 28, 1994, the Church of St. James' was designated a heritage property, and a plaque was installed to signify the distinctive and historic value of the building.

The Organ
The earliest record of an organist in the new St. James' was in 1902. The original organ was built by Casavant Freres of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, and was pumped by hand. It was completely rebuilt in 1964 and refurbished in 1995.
