The church of Santa Maria is one of most outstanding of Navarre. The construction of the first church, of late Romanesque style, began in 1175 and is one of the largest on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago. The building underwent successive modifications was completed in the 18th century, when the Baroque style was fashionable.
Under a Renaissance exterior, the interior is richly executed in the Baroque style. The 17th-century main altar Baroque reredos is presided over by a Gothic image of Santa Maria. Reredos of the four other collateral altars were also executed in the Baroque style except the one in the Visitation chapel which was executed in late Gothic style.
The chancel includes Mannerist stonework.
The Organ
The organ was built in 1760-61 by Lucas Tarazona, from Lerin, at the cost of 5,600 reals and the organ case was executed by Diego, from Camporredondo, at the cost of 2,280 reals. The organcase is decorated with nine musical statues of angels or children. This decoration clearly announces the Rococo style. The large masks painted on the mouths of the pipes are very interesting since each one of them imitates a gesture face of the human face.
Minor repairs and tuning works were executed in the 18th century. It was also repaired after being "damaged by troops" in 1839.
Renovations by organbuilder Inchaurbe in 1901 included a new winchest, new bellows, na ew 56-note manual, new porcelain stopknob nameplates and the addition of two stops on the left hand side (Flauta Armonica 8' and Fagot 8') and two stops on the right hand side (Flauta Armonica 8' and Oboe 8').
Other works were possibily carried out by organbuilder Corti, from Valencia, in 1914. The organ case contains unused six 16' pipes, they may have been a Flautado Abierto 16', possibly for the Pedal.
The instrument and its blue and gold painted organcase are considered one of the most beautiful and sumptuous instruments of Navarre.
