Avec son clocher s'élevant à 63 mètres (207 pieds) du sol, l'église Saint-Nicolas (l'appellation officielle allemande : Protestant-Lutheran Kirchgemeinde Saint Nikolai and Saint Johanniser) est la plus grande église de Leipzig et, mis à part l'église Saint-Thomas, elle est aussi la plus connue. À l'automne 1989, l'église Saint-Nicolas reçut une attention nationale pour ses « démonstrations du lundi ». Celles-ci, initiées par le pasteur protestant Christian Führer et dirigées contre le régime communiste de la RDA, émanèrent des prières qui se tinrent dans cette église depuis le début des années 1980 et qui réunissaient, au début, que quelques personnes. À la fin des années 1980, des dizaines de milliers de personnes, et quelques fois plus de 100,000 personnes, se réunissaient dans les rues de Leipzig pour réclamer la démocratie, le libre choix, la liberté de voyager et la réunification de l'Allemagne. Des personnes se réunissaient dans l'église pour prier pour la paix tandis que des dizaines de milliers d'autres s'amassaient à l'extérieur tenant des chandelles et chantant « Wir sind das Volk » (« Nous sommes le peuple »). La chute du mur de Berlin eut lieu le 9 novembre 1989 et la réunification de l'Allemagne, le 3 octobre 1990. Une réplique d'une colonne de l'église, créée par l'artiste local Andreas Stötzner, fut érigée sur le terrain de l'église en mémorial à ces démonstrations.
Historique
L'église est construite vers 1165 au moment où la ville de Leipzig, alors connue comme la ville de Saint-Nicolas, est fondée. Cette appellation honore saint Nicolas, le saint patron des marchands et des grossistes, et est située en plein coeur de la ville à l'intersection de deux importantes routes commerciales d'alors. Elle est construite dans le style roman lequel est toujours visible du côté ouest de l'église. L'édifice est agrandi au début du XVIe siècle selon le modèle des églises-salles de style gothique. En 1452, l'église reçoit sa première cloche « Osanna » qui est décorée de représentations du Christ crucifié, des quatre évangélistes, de Saint-Martin et de Saint-Nicolas. En plus de servir pour appeler aux offices religieux, cette cloche sert de tocsin.
Le 25 mai 1539, les réformateurs protestants Justus Jonas Sr (1493-1555) et Martin Luther (1483-1546) prêchent des sermons dans cette église qui devient un siège protestant avec, à sa tête, le théologien Johann Pfeffinger (1493-1573) en tant que surintendant.
La tour octogonale est érigée seulement en 1555 par Hieronymus Lotter et est achevée d'après un dessin par Johann Michael Senkeisen en 1730.
Le Vendredi-Saint, 7 avril 1724, l'église est le théâtre de la première de la « Passion selon Saint-Jean » de Johann Sebastian Bach. D'autres représentations ont lieu en 1728, 1732 et 1749. Plusieurs cantates et oratorios de Bach sont présentés dans cette église par le Choeur de Saint-Thomas.
De 1784 à 1797, l'intérieur de l'église est modifié dans le style néo-classique par le maître constructeur Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe (1746-1816). Le directeur de l'école locale, Adam Friedrich Oeser, crée les plans de l'ameublement. Les transformations de Dauthe sont influencées par les écrits du théorien de l'architecture, le jésuite Marc-Antoine Laugier (1713-1769). Le plan général respecte les recommandations de Laugier incluses dans le chapitre « De la difficulté de décorer les églises gothiques » du livre « Observations sur l'architecturent » (Hague, 1765). Laugier commente, de façon positive, les constructions gothiques d'églises, mais il veut en corriger les formes classiques et en supprimer les éléments médiévaux.
Dauthe réinterprète les images de Laugier concernant les piliers des églises-salles de style gothique tardif en appliquant une couche de stucco sur les piliers en cannelier. Des feuilles vert pâle s'échappent des chapiteaux en forme de palmier cachant ainsi le début de la voûte gothique. Le contenu de la voûte est devenu des caissons dans lesquels on retrouve des rosettes. Le tout dans une palette de blanc, rose pâle et vert. Toutefois, l'ordre corinthien des doubles piliers soutenant les tribunes est basé sur l’« Essai sur l'architecture » de Laugier (Paris, 1753, 2e édition en 1755). Dans le choeur, une voûte à arc brisé est installée en dessous de la voûte médiévale.
Les dernières modifications architecturales majeures surviennent en 1901 et 1902 sur la façade extérieure. Toutefois, son apparence gothique tardive est préservée.
De 1966 à 1977, sous la direction de Henrich Magirius et Gerhart Pasch, l'intérieur de l'église est restauré et des réparations sont apportées à son extérieur.
Quoique l'église appartienne à l'Église protestante, elle est aussi utilisée par l'Église catholique pour la messe du dimanche et autres célébrations.
Les orgues
L'orgue de tribune
À partir de l'introduction de la Réforme, en 1539, et jusqu'en 1940, la musique dans les services religieux (motets et cantates) alternait entre l'église Saint-Nicolas et l'église Saint-Thomas par le choeur de Saint-Thomas sous la direction du chef de choeur de Saint-Thomas (poste également connu sous le nom de « Director musices » ou « Maître de chapelle ». Le plus illustre d'entre eux est Johann Sebastian Bach qui entra en fonction à Saint-Nicolas en mai 1723.
À côté du chef de choeur comme directeur de la musique sacrée, des organistes sont embauchés pour chacune des églises. La lignée des organistes de Saint-Nicolas compte des personnalités importantes sur le plan de la création : Johann Rosenmüller (1651-1655), Adam Krieger (1655-1657), Johann Gottlieb Görner (1721-1729), Johann Schneider (1730-1766) et plus récemment Karl Hoyer (1826-1836) et Walter Zöllner (1936-1942).
La première évocation de la présence d'un orgue remonte à la moitié du XVe siècle. C'est ainsi qu'en 1479, il est attesté qu'un orgue est installé dans la tribune ouest de l'aile sud. Il est attesté que le tout premier nouvel orgue a été construit par Johann Lange, de Kamenz, en 1597/98. La composition de cet instrument nous a été transmise par Michael Praetorius dans l'organographie du Syntagma musicum (Wittenberg 1614/15, II, p. 179f).
Il est aussi attesté, à plusieurs reprises, que des réparations et des transformations sont apportées sur l'instrument comme celle, par exemple, de Joachim Thayssner, de Merseburg, en 1693/1694. Le facteur d'orgues Johann Scheibe, appuyé par J. S. Bach, rénove l'instrument en 1725 pour la somme de 600 talers. Il n'est pas sûr que Bach lui-même ait joué sur cet orgue; on peut tout au plus le supposer pour des cas d'exception. À Leipzig, en effet, il n'est pas dans sa fonction de tenir l'orgue. Le fait qu'il est utilisé l'instrument, de façon concertante, dans l'interprétation des cantates est visible entre autres dans la sinfonia de la cantate BWV 29, Wir danken dir Gott, wir danken dir (Nous rendons grâce à Dieu, oui nous rendons grâce) écrite pour souligner l'élection du conseil.
L'intérieur de l'église est complètement transformé entre les années 1784 et 1797 pour en faire un vaste lieu de style classique léger ce qui, conséquemment, va commander l'acquisition d'un nouvel orgue. Johann Gottlob Trampeli, d'Adorf, construit un instrument de 49 jeux répartis sur trois claviers et pédale.
Cet instrument doit pourtant céder sa place, en 1862, aux nouvelles grandes orgues construites par Friedrich Ladegast (1818-1905), de Weissenfel. Doté de 84 jeux répartis sur quatre claviers et pédale, c'est le plus gros instrument jamais construit par Ladegast et, en même temps, le plus grand instrument de Saxe. Encore aujourd'hui, il compte encore parmi les plus grands instruments d'Allemagne. Cet instrument joue un rôle important dans la tendance d'interpréter les oeuvres d'orgue de Bach d'une façon plus romantique qui est alors à la mode dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Cet instrument utilise des sommiers à registres et une traction mécanique. La difficulté d'en jouer, étant donné la taille de l'instrument, conduit Ladegast, en 1872, à installer des machines pneumatiques Barker aux claviers du Hauptwerk et de Récit pour faciliter le jeu accouplé. L'instrument est rénové en 1888 et restauré en 1895.
En 1902/1903, Wilhelm Sauer (1831-1916), de Francfort/Oder, entreprend une transformation radicale de l'instrument tout en conservant la majeure partie de la tuyauterie. À cette occasion, dans le but de faciliter le toucher, il opte pour une traction pneumatique et des sommiers à pistons. Le système de vent est complètement changé. L'introduction de nouveaux jeux en porte le nombre à 93. D'autres transformations, de moindre importance, surviennent en 1926 et en 1934 où des éléments néo-baroques sont introduits. Elles concernent l'ajout d'accessoires à la console, le remplacement de quelques jeux et l'ajout d'un Flageolet 2' à la pédale.
D'octobre 1986 à janvier 1988, l'orgue est complètement rénové par la firme Sauer, de Francfort/Oder. Les travaux consistent, entre autres, à nettoyer en profondeur tout l'instrument, à rénover la tuyauterie, à mettre en place une traction électropneumatique pour les claviers et les jeux (Système Heuss) ainsi qu'à réharmoniser et accorder l'instrument restauré.
Le coeur de la reconstruction exécutée en 2002/2004 par Hermann Eule, de Bautzen, est la restitution de l'instrument original de Ladegast. Ceci est rendu possible grâce aux restaurations déjà réalisées sur des orgues Ladegast et la reconstruction des jeux absents se basant sur des modèles disponibles dans les orgues de la cathédrale de Merseburg et celle de Schwerin. Les deux tiers de la tuyauterie sont d'origine. Il n'existe aucun emprunt ni extension à l'exception du jeu Vox populi disponible sur les claviers II et III. La nouvelle console est une conception réalisée par le personnel de la firme Porsche.
Le jour de la Réforme, le 31 octobre 2004, marque la fin des travaux de restauration de l'intérieur de l'église ainsi que de ceux de la restauration de l'orgue Ladegast. L'événement est célébré par un service, des festivités et un concert donné par Jürgen Wolf. Depuis lors, l'orgue est entendu lors des cérémonies et lors de concerts.
L'orgue de choeur
L'orgue a été inauguré le 21 juillet 2002 par Thomas Wolf.

With its bell tower reaching 207 feet (63 meters) above the ground, St. Nicholas church (official German name: Protestant-Lutheran Kirchgemeinde Saint Nikolai and Saint Johanniser) is the largest church in Leipzig and, apart from Thomaskirche, it is the best-known church in town. In autumn 1989, the Nikolaikirche rose to national fame with its Monday Demonstrations. These demonstrations, initiated by Protestant priest Christian Führer and which were directed against the GDR communist regime, developed from the Monday prayers which were already taken place in the church since the beginning of the 1980s which were attended, at first, only by few people. By the end of the 1980s, ten thousand gathered, sometimes even more than 100,000 people, gathered in the streets to demonstrate for democracy, free choice, travel freedom and the reunification of Germany. People gathered in the church to pray for peace while the tens of thousands amassed outside holding candles and chanting "Wir sind das Volk" ("We are the people"). The fall of the Berlin Wall took place on November 9th, 1989, and the reunion of Germany on October 3rd, 1990. A replica of a church pillar, created by local artist Andreas Stötzner, was erected in 1999 in the church plaza as reminders of these demonstrations.
History
The church was built around 1165 when Leipzig, also known as St. Nicholas's City, was founded. It is named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of merchants and wholesalers, and is located in the very heart of the city on the intersection of two then important trade roads. It was built in the Romanesque style which is still visible today on the west side of the church. The church was extended and enlarged in the early 16th century in a more Gothic-style hall church. In 1452, the church received its first bell "Osanna" which is decorated with representations of crucified Jesus, the four evangelists, St. Martin and St. Nicholas. The bell rang not only for services, but was also used as fire bell.
On May 25th, 1539, Protestant reformers Justus Jonas Sr. (1493-1555) and Martin Luther (1483-1546) preached sermons in the church which became a Protestant seat with theologian Johann Pfeffinger (1493-1573) as its first Superintendent.
The octagonal tower was erected only in 1555 by Hieronymus Lotter and was completed according to a draft by Johann Michael Senkeisen in 1730.
On Good Friday, April 7th, 1724, the church saw the premiere of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion. Other performances took place in 1728, 1732, and 1749. Many of his cantatas and oratorios were performed in the church by the Thomanerchor.
From 1784 to 1797, the interior was altered in the neoclassical style by local master builder Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe (1746-1816). Local academy manager, Adam Friedrich Oeser, created the plans of the furnishings. Dauthe's transformations were influenced by architecture theorist Jesuit Marc-Antoine Laugier's (1713-1769) writing. The overall concept follows Laugier's recommendations included in the chapter "De la difficulté de décorer les églises gothques" (Difficulties in decorating Gothic churches) in his "Observations sur l'architecture" (Hague, 1765). Laugier commented positively on Gothic church constructions, however, he wanted to correct classical forms and remove medieval elements.
Dauthe reinterpreted to Laugier's images of the late Gothic hall church pillars by applying a stucco coating on fluting columns. The pale green sheets bursting forth from the palm capitals conceal the beginning of the Gothic vault. The vault fields became caissons filled with rosettes. Everything is done using the color palette of white, pale rose, and green. However, the Corinthian order from double columns supporting the galleries is based on Laugier's "Essai sur l'architecture" (Paris, 1753, 2nd ed. in 1755). In the chancel, a wooden barrel vault was installed below the medieval vault.
The last major architectural changes occurred from 1901 to 1902 on the exterior facade. Its late Gothic look was preserved.
From 1966 to 1977, under the direction of Heinrich Magirius and Gerhart Pasch, the church interior was restored and the exterior was repaired.
Although the church belongs to the Protestant church, the building is also used by the Catholic Church for its Sunday mass and other celebrations.
The Organs
The Gallery Organ
From the introduction of the Reformation (1539) to 1940, St. Nikolai and St. Thomas were alternately in charge of the figural music (motets and cantatas) in the services performed by the Thomas Choir that was conducted by the cantor at St. Thomas (also referred to as the « Director musices » or the « chapel-master ». The most important cantor was Johann Sebastian Bach who took up his post in Leipzig at St. Nikolai in May 1723.
Besides the cantor as the leading church musician, separate organists were appointed at the individual churches. Among the organists of St. Nikolai, there are several creatively outstanding personalities: Johann Rosenmüller (1651-1655), Adam Krieger (1655-1657), Johann Gottlieb Görner (1721-1729), Johann Schneider (1730-1766) and more recently, Karl Hoyer (1926-1936) and Walter Zöllner (1936-1942).
The earliest reference to an organ originates from the mid-15th century. In 1479, it was described as being located in the west gallery of the south side-aisle. The first new organ was built by Johann Lange, from Kamenz, in 1597/1598. The specifications of the instrument were handed down by Michael Praetorius in the Organographia of the Syntagma musicum (Wittenberg 1614/15, II, p. 179pp.)
There were several repairs and modifications carried out over the years; e.g., in 1693/1694, they were executed by Joachim Thayssner, from Merseburg. Organbuilder Johann Scheibe, who was supported by J. S. Bach, replaced the instrument in 1725 at a cost of 600 thalers. It is not verified whether Bach played or not the organ himself and this might have happened in exceptional cases only because playing the organ was not one of his duties in Leipzig. The fact that he integrated the instrument concertante into the cantata performances becomes obvious from the sinfonia of cantata BWV 29 entitled Wir danken dir Gott, wir danken dir (We thank thou God, we really do) that was destined for the council election.
The complete redesign of the church interior in the years 1784-1797, resulted in the creation of a high, light classicist preaching room which also required a new organ later on. Johann Gottlob Trampeli, from Adorf, built the instrument with 49 stops over three manuals and pedal.
However, this organ had to give way, in 1862, to the large organ built by Friedrich Ladegast (1818-1905), from Weissenfel. With 84 stops over four manuals and pedal and 32' pipework in the organcase facade, it was Ladegast's largest opus and, at the same time, the largest organ in Saxony. Even today, it is still one of the largest organs in Germany. This instrument played a significant role in the trend towards a rather romantic interpretation of Bach's organ works in the latter half of the 19th century. The organ was equipped with slider chests and mechanical action. Due to the size of the instrument, the action was difficult to play; pneumatic Barker levers on Hautpwerk and Récit were added for facilitating the coupled playing by Ladegast in 1872. The instrument was revised in 1888 and restored in 1895.
In 1902/1903, the organ was thoroughly modified by Wilhelm Sauer (1831-1916), from Frankfurt/Oder, while retaining most of the existing pipework. To obtain an easier playing action, the instrument was equipped with pneumatic action and cone-valve chests. The wind system was completely rebuilt. New stops were added and the number of stops grew to 93. Further minor modifications were carried out in 1926 and in 1934 where neo-Baroque elements were introduced. There were additional accessories installed at the console, some stops were replaced and the pedal received a 2' Flageolet.
From October 1986 to January 1988, the organ was completely restored by the Sauer firm, from Frankfurt/Oder. The works included cleaning of the whole instrument, pipework renovation, installation of an electropneumatic key and stop action (Heuss system) and, complete voicing and tuning of the restored instrument.
Center of the reconstruction by Hermann Eule, of Bautzen, carried out in 2002/03, was the tonal restitution of the much-praised Ladegast original instrument. This was possible thanks to the already carried out restorations of Ladegast organs and by the reconstruction of the missing stops according to models still available in the large organs in Merseburg and Schwerin cathedrals. Two-thirds of the pipework are original. There are no borrowings or extensions except for the Vox populi on manuals II and III. The new console was designed by Porsche personnel.
On Reformation Day, October 31st, 2004, the renovation work on the interior of the church as well as the restoration of the Ladegast organ was completed in a festival service and a concert given by Jürgen Wolf. Since then, the organ is heard in the services and in many organ recitals.
The Chancel Organ
The organ was inaugurated on July 31st, 2002, by Thomas Wolf.
