La cathédrale de Winchester est l'une des plus vastes cathédrales en Angleterre et, avec sa longue nef, la seconde au niveau de tout l'Europe. Elle est dédiée à la Sainte-Trinité, Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul, et Saint Swithun.
L'histoire de la vielle cathédrale « Old Minster » remonte à l'arrivée de saint Birinus en 635 et la conversion au christianisme du roi Kynegils. La cathédrale a été fondée par le roi Cenwalh en 642 sur un site situé juste au nord du site de la cathédrale actuelle. En 971, elle est devenue église abbatiale. Les restes de saint Swithun, qui étaient enterrés près de la vieille cathédrale, ont été ramenés dans l'église puis dans la nouvelle cathédrale normande. L'église fut considérablement agrandie par Saint Athelwold (963-984). Selon certians, il l'a complètement reconstruit. Elle fut complétée par l'évêque saint Elphege. La cathédrale possédait une tour centrale, des allées au sud et au nord, peut-être des transepts, une crypte surmontée une abside à l'est, et une cour à l'ouest. La cathédrale fut inaugurée d'abord en 980 alors que l'édifice était assez complété pour que l'on puisse y tenir des services religieux, puis en 993 lorsque la construction fut terminée. Ce vieil édifice a été démoli en 1093.
Les fondations de la cathédrale actuelle furent posées par l'évêque Walkelin, le premier évêque normand, en 1079, avec des pierres provenant de l'Île de Wight et du bois provenant des fôrets de chêne du Hampshire. Le 8 avril 1093, en présence de presque tous les évêques et abbés d'Angleterre, les moines quittèrent la vieille cathédrale pour emménager dans la nouvelle cathédrale et ce, « avec grande joie et fierté ». La cathédrale, de style normand, mesurait 173,4 mètres (569 pieds) de long, la plus longue alors existante. C'érait 13 mètres (43 pieds) de plus que le présent édifice. La grande tour au-dessus de la croisée des transepts s'est écroulée en 1107 probablement dû à des failles dans les fondations et les pièces adjacentes au niveau des deux transepts furent reconstruites lors de la reconstruction de la tour en 1202. La presque totalité de l'édifice a été restaurée mis à part la crypte et els transepts.
Le premier agrandissement au plan de Walkelin eut lieu en 1202 alors que l'évêque Godfrey de Lucy débuta la construction du l'arrière choeur : la chapelle de la Vierge encadrée de ses chapelles et l'allée est qui mène au sanctuaire de Saint-Swithun avec son corridor de procession. La chapelle est l'est fut démolie au XIIIe siècle et, tôt au début du XIVe siècle, les travaux de reconstruction débutèrent mais cette fois à partir de l'est. Les travaux reprirent plus tard au cous du même siècle pour se poursuivre jusqu'aux piliers de la tour. Ces travaux ont été réalisés par l'évêque Edington (1345-66) qui, à la fin de son épiscopat, était en train de reconstuire l'extrémité occidentale de la nef suite à la démolition des vieilles tours romanes et les remplacer par un superbe porche triple.
Quoiqu'ayant exécuté certains travaux sur la cathédrale au début de son épiscopat, l'évêque William of Wykeham (1366-1404), jusqu'en 1371, il y eut une pause pendant qu'il voyait à la construction du Collège Winchester et le New Collège, Oxford. En 1393, il mit sur pied un fonds pour poursuivre les travaux sur la cathédrale. En 1394, il entreprit de remodeler la nef, dans le style perpendiculaire, selon les plans du maître maçon William Wynford. Ces travaux se sont poursuivis jusqu'à la mort en 1404 laissant à ses successeurs le soin de les terminer. Le travail consistait à couper, sur place, la maçonnerie normande et de restructurer les piliers. Les élévations originales à trois niveaux sont ramenées à deux niveaux en coupant le haut des arches normandes et de les reconstituer à un niveau plus élevé. À la même occasion, toutes les voûtes de la nef ont été refaites. Les travaux furent terminés sous l'épiscopat de William Waynflete (1447-1486).
Les prochains travaux architecturaux d'importance sur le remodelage de la travée est de la chapelle de la Vierge, la voûte des deux travées a été refaite; ces travaux ont été réalisés sous l'épiscopat de l'évêque Courtenay (1486-92) et la voûte de la chapelle sud-ouest a été refaite sous l'épiscopat de son successeur, Thomas Langton (1493-1500). Le dernier évêque à voir entrepris des travaux d'envergure fut Richard Fox (1500-28) qui refit le gable est, et les allées avec leurs voûtes. Il ajouta les arcs-boutants et leurs hautes voûtes de bois.
Le Prieuré bénédictin de Saint-Swithun fut dissout en 1539. Le cloître et la salle du chapitre furent démolis mais le cathédrale fut conservée.
Des travaux de restauration furent réalisés par Thomas Graham Jackson au cours des années 1905-1912 incluant la fameux sauvetage de l'édifice qui menaçait de s'effondrer totalement. Les fondations détrempées des murs sud et est furent renforcées par un plongeur, William Walker, qui y déposa plus de 25 000 sacs de béton, 115 000 blocs de béton et 900 000 briques. Il travailla six heure spar jous de 1906 à 1912 dans l'obscurité la plus totale et à des profondeurs atteignant parfois 6 mètres (20 pieds). Cet action a effectivement sauver la cathédrale d'un effondrement total.
L'orgue
L'histoire de la musique à la cathédrale de Winchester remonte aux temps anciens. Les archives rapportent qu'il y eut un superbe orgue installé sur ordre de l'évêque saint Elphege, au Xe siècle. Cet orgue était le plus considérable de ceux connus à l'époque. Cette présence procurait à Winchester d'être renommé par tout l'Angleterre. Mis à part cet instrument, il n'existe aucun archive sur les instruments qui lui ont succédé et ce, jusqu'à la Restauration.
Au cours du règle de la reine Elizabeth I, l'évêque Robert Horne ordonna le retrait de l'orgue de la cathédrale, En 1646, durant la Guerre civile, Cromwell captura la ville et ses troupes détruisirent complètement l'orgue. Cette destruction est probablement survenue suite à l'autorisation accordée par l'ordonnance d'aoûte 1643 votée par Parlement qui visait la destruction de tous les monuments supertitieux qui incluaient les orgues et leurs buffets.
Après la Restauration, en 1665, le Doyen et le Chapitre signèrent un contrat avec Thomas Thamer, de Cambridge, pour la construction d'un nouvel orgue - neuf jeux pour le grand orgue et cinq jeux pour l'orgue de choeur - au coût de £720. Il sera complété en 1670.
Le 7 décembre 1693, le Doyen et le Chapitre signèrent un contrat avec Renatus Harris, de Londres, pour la construction d'un nouvel orgue. Avant la mi-été 1694, Harris devait construire un grand orgue de 12 jeux/20 rangs et 925 tuyaux et l'installer dans le buffet existant. Cet orgue est demeuré à la cathédrale jusqu'en 1852 au moment où il fut remis au facteur Willis en tant que paiement partiel sur un nouvel instrument. Il fut, par la suite, reconstruit et installé à l'église Christ Church, Lancaster Gate puis démonté et transféré, en 1884, à l'église St. Peter, Southsea.
Le coeur de l'instrument actuel consiste de la tuyauterie provenant de l'orgue monumental construit par Henry Willis pour la Grande Exposition de Hyde Park en 1851. Il était le premier grand orgue entièrement construit par Willis. Avec ses 70 jeux, il était le plus considérable lors de l'Exposition. Un intérêt considérable se créa autour de cet instrument incluant une visite privée par la reine Victoria pour l'entendre. Aussi présent à l'Exposition, l'organiste de la cathédrale de Winchester, Samuel Sebastian Wesley, se lia d'amitié avec le jeune facteur et collaborera avec lui en 1854. À l'instigation de Wesley, l'orgue fut installé à Winchester sous une forme réduite mais améliorée avec 49 jeux répartis sur quatre claviers. L'instrument possédait alors des caractéristiques uniques: des boutons-poussoirs et un pédalier concave - une première mondiale pour un orgue installé dans une cathédrale - ainsi que des choeurs et mixtures disponibles tant au niveau des claviers qu'au pédalier. La reint Victoria soutint son intérêt pour l'instrument et, avec le Prince Albert, ils furent parmi les souscripteurs du nouvel instrument. John Staner était l'un des choristes lors du concert inaugural et, cet instrument était bien connu de l'organiste Hubert Parry au cours de ses années de jeunesse. En fait, l'orgue de Winchester était un prototype pour plusieurs autres orgues construites par Henry Willis au cours de la longue carrière qui s'échelonna sur presque 60 ans au cours de laquelle sa firme contruisit plus de 2 000 instruments.
Après de nombreux services à Winchester, l'orgue fut reconstruit et agrandi par Willis en 1897 avec quelques modifications sonores qui reflétaient maintenant sa marque de commerce et qui répondaient aux goûts du jour. Toutefois, l'instrument conserva toujours sa structure classique. La firme Hele procéda à un agrandissement considérable de l'instrument en 1905. De ces ajouts, les jeux de Bombarde de la pédale et un jeu de la division Swell demeurent encore dans l'instrument.
La firme Harrison & Harrison prend charge de l'entretien de l'orgue et entrepend une reconstruction majeure en 1938 alors que l'instrument adopte une sonorité plus romantique tout en présenvant la tuyauterie historique provenant de l'orgue de la Grande Exposition. Cinquante ans plus tard, de 1986 à 1988, la firme reconstruit l'instrument dans sa forme actuelle de 79 jeux, incorporation la nouvelle division Nave à double usage et une nouvelle division Choir agrandie. La division de la pédale a acquis une meilleure versatilité et plus de clarté par l'ajout de nouveaux choeurs indépendents. La structure sonore originale de Willis a repris sa proéminence par l'élimination de certains des changements apportés en 1905 et 1938.
Mis à part la division de la pédale, il existe aucun emprunt ou extension de jeux dans l'instrument actuel. La console détachée possède 118 tirants de jeux et plusieurs aides. Il s'agit d'un des orgues les plus versatiles capables de rendre justice à toute la littérature d'orgue peu importe l'époque, incluant les oeuvres magistrales de J.S. Bach et les oeuvres monumentales romantiques des XIXe et XXe siècles composées en son honneur.
Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England, said to be the second longest, and with the longest nave, in Europe. It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Swithun.
The history of the Old Minster, as the cathedral was then known, is said to begin with the arrival of St. Birinus in 635 and the conversion of King Kynegils to Christianity. The cathedral was originally founded in 642 on an immediately adjoining site to the north by King Cenwalh. In 971, it became part of a monastic settlement. St. Swithun was buried near the Old Minster and then in it, on July 15, 971, before being moved to the new Norman cathedral. St. Athelwold (963–984) greatly enlarged the church, or, according to the later account, completely rebuilt it. It was finished by Bishop St. Elphege and it was said to have had a central tower, north and south aisles, perhaps transepts, an eastern apse with a crypt beneath it and a forecourt at the west. The church was dedicated in 980 and again in 993, the former date probably marking the completion of as much of the building as would suffice for holding services and the latter the end of the whole work. The Old Minster was demolished in 1093.
The foundations of the current cathedral were laid by Bishop Walkelin, the first Norman bishop, in 1079, of stone brought from the Isle of Wight and timber from one of Hampshire's oak forests. On April 8, 1093, in the presence of nearly all the bishops and abbots of England, the monks removed from Saxon cathedral churches of the Old Minster to the new one, "with great rejoicing and glory" to mark its completion. The Norman cathedral measured 569 feet (173.4 meters) in length, the longest then in existence. This is 43 feet (13 meters) longer than the present structure. The great tower over the crossing fell in 1107, probably on account of the badness of the foundation and the adjoining parts of both transepts were reconstructed when the tower was rebuilt in 1202. Most of the building has been restored, with only the crypt and transepts surviving.
The first enlargement of Walkelin's plan took place in 1202, when Bishop Godfrey de Lucy began to build the Retrochoir (the area behind the quire): the Lady chapel with its flanking chapels and the aisled building from which they open eastwards, to the shrine of St. Swithun, with a procession path around it. Walkelin's eastern chapel was demolished in the 13th century, and early in the 14th century the rebuilding work begun from the east. Work resumed later in the same century and carried as far as the east piers of the tower. This part is probably due to Bishop Edington (1345–66), who at the end of his episcopate was rebuilding the west end of the nave by demolishing the old Romanesque west towers and building the fine triple porch.
William of Wykeham (1366–1404) seems to have done some work on the church early in his episcopate, about 1371. There was a pause during which time he built Winchester College and New College, Oxford. In 1393, he took steps to raise a building fund. In 1394, he undertook the work of remodelling the nave to the designs of master mason William Wynford, in the Perpendicular style, and carried it on till his death in 1404, leaving its completion to his successors. This was accomplished by cutting the Norman stonework in-situ and recasting the piers. The elevations were altered from the original 3 storey work into 2 storey by cutting out the heads of the Norman arched arcade and resetting them at a higher level. The whole nave was also re-vaulted at this time. Work was finally completed under Bishop William Waynflete (1447-1486).
The next structural work of any importance was the remodelling of the east bay of the Lady chapel, both bays being revaulted; this belongs to the time of Bishop Courtenay (1486–92) and the vault of the south-east chapel was rebuilt in the time of his successor Thomas Langton (1493–1500). The last bishop to make any considerable alteration was Richard Fox (1500–28) who rebuilt the presbytery aisles with their vaults and the east gable of the presbytery, and added the flying buttresses and the high wooden vault there.
The Benedictine foundation, the Priory of St. Swithun, was dissolved in 1539. The cloister and chapter house were demolished, but the cathedral continued.
Restoration work was carried out by Thomas Graham Jackson during the years 1905–1912, including the famous saving of the building from total collapse. Some waterlogged foundations on the south and east walls were reinforced by a diver, William Walker, packing the foundations with more than 25,000 bags of concrete, 115,000 concrete blocks and 900,000 bricks. He worked six hours a day from 1906 to 1912 in total darkness at depths up to 20 feet (6 meters), and is credited with saving the cathedral from total collapse.
The Organ
The musical history of Winchester Cathedral goes back to early times, for there is a record of a wonderful organ established there by order of Bishop St. Elphege, in the 10th century, which seems to have been the largest one then known, and caused Winchester to become famous throughout England. There are no records of the organs in the cathedral from this time till the Restoration period.
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Bishop Robert Horne is said to have ordered the organ to be removed from the cathedral. In 1646, during the Civil War, Cromwell captured the city and this troops totally destroyed the organ. This destruction was probably carried out on the authority of an Ordinance passed by Parliament in August 1643 for abolishing superstitious monuments including all organs and cases.
After the Restoration, in 1665, the Dean and Chapter entered into an agreement with Thomas Thamer, of Cambridge, to build a new organ - nine stops in the Great and five stops in the Choir, - at the cost of £720. It was completed in 1670.
On December 7, 1693, the Dean and Chapter entered into an agreement with Renatus Harris, of London, to build a new organ. Before midsummer 1694, Harris had to build and set up in the existing organcase a great organ consisting of 12 stops/20 ranks and 925 speaking pipes. This organ remained in the cathedral until 1852 when it was taken by Willis in part payment and later rebuilt and erected in Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, being removed from there in 1884 and transferred to St. Peter's Southsea.
The core of the present instrument consists of pipework from the monumental organ built by Henry Willis for the Great Exhibition at Hyde Park in 1851. This was the first large organ wholly built by Willis, and with 70 stops it was also the largest at the Exhibition. It created considerable interest including a private visit by Queen Victoria to hear the instrument. Also present at the Exhibition was Winchester Cathedral's organist Samuel Sebastian Wesley who befriended and collaborated with the young organbuilder in 1854. At Wesley's instigation, the organ was installed at Winchester in a reduced but improved form as a four-manual instrument of 49 stops with the then unique features of thumb pistons and a radiating and concave pedal board - believed to have been the first cathedral organ in the world to have such features - and fully developed choruses and mixtures both on the manuals and the pedal organ. Queen Victoria maintained her interest, and she and Prince Albert were among the subscribers to the new instrument. John Stainer was one of the choristers at the inaugural service, and in his early years this instrument was well known to Hubert Parry. In a real sense the Winchester organ was a prototype for numerous other cathedral organs built by Henry Willis in his long career of almost 60 years in which his firm built over 2000 organs.
After long service at Winchester the organ was rebuilt and enlarged by Willis in 1897 with some tonal alterations reflecting his developed house style and changed public taste. However, the instrument has always retained a strongly classical foundation. A further considerable enlargement by the firm of Hele took place in 1905. Of their additions the Pedal 32' and 16' Bombardes and the Swell 16' Double Diapason remain.
Harrison & Harrison took over the care of the organ and undertook a major rebuilding in 1938 when the instrument acquired a more romantic bias, although preserving the historic material from the Great Exhibition organ. Almost 50 years later from 1986 to 1988 they completely reconstructed the instrument in its present form of 79 stops, incorporating a new dual-purpose Nave division and a largely new Choir organ. The pedal organ was given greater versatility and clarity with new and completely independent choruses. The original Willis work returned to its due prominence in the instrument by reversing some of the changes made in 1905 and 1938.
There is virtually no extension or "borrowing" of stops in the present organ except in the Pedal division. The detached console has 108 draw stops and comprehensive playing aids. This is one of the most versatile cathedral organs capable of doing justice to the music of all schools of music for the instrument, including the classical masterworks of J. S. Bach and the monumental 19th and 2Oth century romantic works composed in homage to his name.
