L'église

En mars 1845, un groupe de huit personnes sont déterminées à cheminer ensemble en tant qu'église du Christ. En 1850, un édifice était construit au coin des rues York et Talbot d'où son nom Église baptiste de la rue York, lequel ne fut officialisé qu'en 1877. Une nouvelle et plus vaste église fut construite sur la rue Talbot, et dès le début de 1882, la communauté commença à utiliser l'église baptiste de la rue Talbot.

Pour les prochaine sept décennies, la communauté s'est accrue et, périodiquement, il fut question d'agrandissement ou de déménagement. Un nouveau terrain devint disponible et, en 1954, la communauté déménagea en son emplacement actuel au coin des rues Clarence et Richmond.

Le nouvel emplacement nécessitait un nouveau nom : Première (First) église baptiste. La justesse du nom est facilement compréhensible: de l'église de la rue York vint l'église de la rue Adelaide; de l'église de la rue Talbot vinrent celles des rues Maitland, Egerton, Wortley and Kensal Park; les églises de Sunrise et Westview se sont développées, au cours des années récentes, grâce aux efforts et le support de l'église First. La plupart des églises baptistes de la ville de London peuvent remonter leurs origines à la filière de l'église baptiste York-Talbot-First.

Au cours des dernières trente années, l'édifice de l'église baptiste First a acquis un caractère distinctif et significatif. Une douzaine de verrières ont été installées à la gloire de Dieu et en tant que mémorial à des membres. La verrière de l'Ascension, la seule provenant de l'édifice de la rue Talbot, éclaire le mur du-dessus du baptistère et de la table de communion.

L'orgue

L'orgue, Opus 882 de Casavant, fut installé d'abord dans l'ancien édifice, l'église baptiste de la rue Talbot, en 1920. Après un incendie en 1950, l'orgue fut remisé. Il fut ré-installé dans l'église actuelle en 1954, et fut reconstruit par la firme Principal Pipe Organ en 1969. Dodington & Dodington y installe une nouvelle console (provenant de l'opue 2901 de Casavant) et ré-harmonise l'instrument en 1999.

The Church

In March 1845, a group of eight adults are determined to walk together as a church of Christ. By 1850, a building was erected at York and Talbot Streets, although the name, York Street Baptist Church, was not officially adopted until 1877. A new and larger church was constructed on Talbot Street, and early in 1882 the congregation began to worship in the Talbot Street Baptist Church.

For the next seven decades, the congregation grew in number and periodically came the thought to expansion or relocation. A new parcel of land became available and, in 1954, the congregation moved to its present site on Clarence and Richmond Streets.

The new location required a new name: First Baptist Church. The appropriateness of this name is readily understood: from the York Street Church came the Adelaide Street Church; from the Talbot Street Church came Maitland Street, Egerton Street, Wortley Road, and Kensal Park Churches; Sunrise and Westview Churches have developed largely through the efforts and support of First Church in recent years. Most of London's Baptist churches can trace their ancestry to the York-Talbot -First Baptist line.

In its thirty or so years, First Baptist's building has acquired a distinctive and meaningful character. A dozen stained glass windows have been placed to the glory of God and as memorials to members. The Ascension window, the only one removed from the Talbot Street building, illumines the wall above the baptistry and the communion table.

The Organ

The organ, Opus 882 from Casavant, was first installed in the congregation's old building, Talbot Street Baptist Church, in 1920. After a fire in 1950, the organ was placed in storage. It was re-assembled and installed in the present building in 1954, and was rebuilt by the Principal Pipe Organ Company in 1969. Dodington & Dodington installed a new console (from Casavant Opus 2901) and revoiced the organ in 1999.
