L'église Holy Trinity est la quatrième plus ancienne église anglicane de Toronto après la cathédrale St. James, Little Trinity, et St. George the Martyr. Elle a été fondée en octobre 1847 en protestation contre la pratique de la location des bancs qui avait pour but de procurer des revenus. Cette pratique avait alors cours à Toronto tout comme en Angleterre. La construction a été rendue possible grâce à un don anonyme de £5,000 qui s'avèrera provenir de Mary Lambert Swale, de Settle (Angleterre). Elle décède à l'âge de 25 ans en Angleterre et elle légue cette somme, par testament, en faveur du diocèse de Toronto à condition que les bancs soient « gratuits et jamais assignés ». Les termes du don stipulent aussi que l'édifice devait être cruciforme et de style gothique. De plus, son autel et sa chaire devaient être visibles de tous les bancs. Swale a aussi fait don de plateaux d'argent pour la communion ainsi que des sommes pour les fonts baptismaux et pour les pauvres de la congrégation.
Les terrains ont été donnés par l'Honorable John Simcoe Macaulay en 1845. Alors que des constructions entourent les terrains de l'église au nord, au sud et à l'ouest, les terrains du centre sont réservés pour la construction de l'église. Les terrains du côté Est sont finalement vendus afin de permettre la construction sur la rue Yonge ce qui enclave totalement l'église quoique une rue relie l'église à la rue Yonge.
L'édifice de style gothique Tudor a été conçu par l'architecte Henry Bower Lane et construit par John Harper à qui l'on doit aussi la cathédrale St. Michael. Du calcaire de la vallée Humber et du grès de l'Ohio ont été utilisés pour les fondations et les réseaux.
Le premier recteur, le Révérend Henry Scadding, accepta de travailler bénévolement au cours des deux premières années. Il était aussi un professeur au collège Upper Canada.
À l'origine, l'intérieur était extrêmement simple. Sous la direction du Révérend John Frank, au cours des années 1930 alors que sévissait la grande dépression, l'église devint un centre de conscience sociale. Son épouse, Patricia, institua « L'histoire de Noël » laquelle est produite chaque année depuis 1937.
James Fisk, recteur de 1962 à 1976, joua un rôle important. Durant cette période, il a interpelé les laics afin qu'ils s'impliquent davantage dans la liturgie ainsi que dans l'administration de la paroisse. La congrégation, avec le support d'une large partie de la communauté avoisinante, a fait échouer les plans d'un promoteur qui désirait démolir l'église.
Le 9 mai 1977, un feu se déclare dans les entrepôts Eaton alors adjacents du côté nord et ouest de l'église. Celle-ci perd son toit et trois-quarts de son côté sud, incluant trois fenêtres de la nef. Plus tard ce jour-là, un dimanche, les paroissiens se réunissent à l'extérieur et décident alors que l'église doit demeurer sur son site initial. C'est alors que la reconstruction débute et son plafond est peint en bleu en rappel de l'incendie et du ciel qui servait de toit lors du premier service religieux célébré après l'incendie. Les paroissiens ont occupé les bureaux de la compagnie Cadillac Fairview, qui était propriétaire des entrepôts Eaton, afin d'obtenir une compensation permettant la reconstruction de l'église.
La chapelle
La chapelle Holy Trinity, sise au second étage et conçue par William Hay en 1858, a été la première école pour filles à Toronto avant que la province n'annonce la loi sur l'éducation en Ontario instituant les écoles publiques. William Hay a aussi conçu les deux édifices à l'arrière de l'église. Ces édifices ont abrité les bureaux de la paroisse ainsi que la résidence du premier recteur. Ils continuent d'abriter les bureaux de la paroisse et ceux de différentes oeuvres de charité.
L'orgue
Quoique l'église ait été inaugurée en 1847, la première mention d'un orgue n'apparaît que deux ans plus tard. Un petit instrument mobile a probablement été utilisé au cours de ces années.
Le premier orgue, probablement le plus ancien de la ville, a été installé sur une tribune dans la transept nord. Les différents motifs du plancher du transept sont toujours visibles et attestent de son emplacement. Le facteur est John Thomas, un fabriquant de pianoforte et d'orgues, dont les ateliers étaient situés à Harmony Place, 140 ouest de la rue King, du côté sud entre les rues York et Simcoe. Terminé en 1849, l'instrument est alimenté en vent de façon manuelle et le "pompeur" est payé deux shellings et six pences par mois.
Au cours des décennies qui suivent, des réparations périodiques sont exécutées sur l'instrument. En 1864, les premières réparations majeures sont exécutées par un Monsieur Woodbridge, d'Albany (New York), apparemment un facteur et technicien itinérant. Une véritable reconstruction de l'instrument a lieu en 1874.
En 1884, un nouvel orgue, installé dans l'ancien buffet, est placé dans la partie nord du choeur. L'instrument coût 1 380 $ et est construit par la firme Lye & Son, de Toronto. Cette firme sera responsable pour l'entretien de l'instrument au cours des trois décennies subséquentes.
En 1905, le Conseil paroissial décide qu'il est temps d'effectuer des rénovations à l'instrument et recommande certains ajouts à être apportés à l'instrument afin de rencontrer les besoins du répertoire moderne. Les améliorations proposées, dont le coût est estimé à 500 $, sont confiées à Lye & Sons. Quatre nouveaux jeux sont ajoutés : Cornopean 8' (Swell), Doppel Flute 8' (Great), Viol d'Amour 8' (Choir) et Lieblich Gedackt 16' (Pedal). Au même moment, une pédale de combinaison est installée pour le Great et deux pour le Swell; le pédalier devient concave; un accouplement aigu pour le Swell et un accouplement grave Choir/Great. La boîte d'expression du Swell est agrandie et une pédale d'expression est ajoutée.
En 1915, la firme Casavant Frères, de Saint-Hyacinthe, est chargée de construire un nouveau grand orgue (traction électro-pneumatique, trois claviers manuels de 61 notes et un pédalier de 30 notes, 36 jeux, 39 rangs et 18 accouplements). Le nouvel instrument, installé des deux côtés du choeur, définit la configuration qui sera utilisée lors des reconstructions à venir. Il est inauguré le 26 janvier 1916 par F.A. Moure.
En 1956, la firme Schlicker Organ Company, de Buffalo (New York) procède à une reconstruction de l'orgue mais dans une esthétique baroque, au coût d'environ 60 000$, réutilisant le plus possible le matériel de l'orgue Casavant. Il a été inauguré le 27 février 1957 par Catherine Palmer.
En 1990, une nouvelle console est construite par Thomas Linken, de Toronto. Une sommier à registres électriques de 12 rangs est ajouté. L'instrument comporte alors 51 jeux et 58 rangs.
En 2008, alors que la congrégation de l'église unie Deer Park décide de déménager, l'orgue de cette église devient disponible. Les coûts d'achat, d'installation et de rénovations sont estimés à 200 000$. L'instrument est alors installé dans le transept nord là où le tout premier orgue avait été installé.
L'orgue à l'église unie Deer Park
L'inauguration de l'église prebytérienne Deer Park en février 1913 représente la troisième église et le second emplacement pour une congrégation qui s'était réunie pour la première fois en 1882. Lorsque la congrégation joint les rangs de l'Église Unie du Canada en 1925, quelques membres décident de rester fidèles à leurs racines calvinistes et fondent l'église presbytérienne Calvin à quelques rues plus au nord.
Pendant environ 18 ans, l'orgue Casavant, Opus 508 et datant de 1913, est placé derrière une série de tuyaux chanoines le long du mur arrière du choeur. Des contremarches sont installées devant le buffet pour y accueillir la chorale et, à la hauteur des transepts, une chaire est placée en plein centre.
En 1931, des rénovations majeures amènent un choeur divisé en deux sections et l'orgue est déplacé dans deux buffets montés sur les murs latéraux du choeur. Dans cet agencement, une nouvelle chaire est installée du côté Est alors qu'un ambon en fer forgé est placé du côté Ouest.
En 1944, l'effondrement d'une portion du toit entraîne un nouveau décor pour le sanctuaire. C'est lors de ce nouvel agencement qu'une arche est ajoutée cachant totalement l'orgue alors que deux nouvelles verrières sont ajoutées de chaque côté de la fenêtre principale.
Lorsque la question d'un nouvel orgue est soulevée dans les années 1960, le problème de son emplacement ne fut pas résolu facilement. Au niveau acoustique, les emplacements axials préférés, soit à l'avant de l'église ou sur une tribune arrière, furent également problématiques. La proposition pour un emplacement à l'arrière impliquait une réduction majeure dans la capacité d'accueil de l'église et rencontra l'opposition de la part des membres de la congrégation. Le choeur, avec un espacé très confiné vu la présence de trois grandes fenêtres sur le mur Sud, limitait grandement la taille de l'instrument. Une proposition pour un buffet asymétrique placé du côté gauche du choeur a été rejetée. La solution de compomis fut de placer le nouvel orgue dans le transept Est laissant la chorale dans le sanctuaire. Cet emplacement nécessait le déplacement du vitrail commémoratif dédié aux soldats vers une autre fenêtre sise à la tribune arrière.
Les fonds pour couvrir le déplacement de la fenêtre, l'installation des supports d'acier sous le plancher et pour l'orgue lui-même ont été fournis par Charles C. Rathgeb en mémoire de son épouse, Eileen Elizabeth, décédée en septembre 1967. M. Rathgeb lui-même décède en 1969 avant que l'orgue soit achevé. Son fils, Charles C. Rathgeb, a fait la demande que l'orgue soit dédié à ses deux parents.
The Church of the Holy Trinity is the fourth most ancient Anglican church in Toronto, after St. James' Cathedral, Little Trinity, and St. George the Martyr Church. It was established in October 1847, built as a protest against private reserved pews that were rented for income in Toronto and most of England at the time. The building was made possible by a £5,000 anonymous donation, later revealed to be from Mary Lambert Swale, of Settle (England). She died at 25 years of age in England and left the donation in her will to build a church in the Diocese of Toronto with pews that would be "free and unappropriated forever". The terms of her donation were also that the church would be Gothic in style, cruciform in plan, and its altar and lectern were to be visible from all seats. Swale also donated communion silver and money for the font and the poor to the congregation.
The lands for the church were given by the Honourable John Simcoe Macaulay in 1845. Building lots filled in the edges of the property to the north, south and west of the Trinity site, and the central portion of the property was donated for the construction of the church. Eventually the east side of the Trinity site was sold to permit retail frontage on Yonge Street, enclosing Trinity Church, although a roadway connected Trinity to Yonge Street.
The Tudor Gothic building was designed by architect Henry Bower Lane and built by John Harper who is also acredited with St. Michael's Cathedral. They used limestone from the Humber Valley and sandstone from Ohio for the building's foundation and tracery.
Reverend Dr. Henry Scadding was the Church's first incumbent, who agreed to work for free for the first two years. He was also Master of Classics at Upper Canada College.
The interior was originally extremely plain. During the 1930s — the depression years — the church became known as a home of the social gospel under the then rector, the Reverend John Frank. Patricia Frank, his wife, instituted "The Christmas Story", produced every year since 1937.
James Fisk, Rector from 1962-1976, made a dynamic impact on Holy Trinity. During his rectorship the laity came to take a larger part in worship and governing the parish. The congregation, with supporters from the larger community, successfully fought efforts by a developer to have the church torn down.
On May 9, 1977, a fire began in the Eaton's warehouses, then adjacent to the north and west ends of the Church. Holy Trinity lost its roof and three-quarters of its south side, including three nave windows. Later that day, a Sunday, parishioners gathered to worhsip outside and decided that Holy Trinity should remain standing on its original ground. Thus, rebuilding began and the ceiling was painted blue as a reminder of the fire and the sky that acted as the ceiling in that first gathering of worship after the fire. The parishioners occupied Cadillac Fairview offices that owned the Eaton's warhouses and were successful in obtaining a large settlement to rebuild the church.
The Chapel
Holy Trinity's Chapel on the upper floor began as Toronto's first school for girls, designed by William Hay in 1858 before the province had announced the Ontario Education Act for public schools. William Hay also designed the two buildings at the rear of the Church which acted as the home of the church's first rector and the Rectory which now houses the parish offices and various charities.
The Organ
Although the church was opened in 1847, there is no mention of a permanent organ until two years later. A small portable instrument may have been in use during these years.
The first organ, probably the oldest in the city, is installed in a gallery in the north transept. The different pattern of floorboards in the transept is visible today and reveals its position. The builder is John Thomas, a builder of pianofortes and organs at Harmony Place, 140 King Street West on the south side between York and Simcoe streets. Completed in 1849, the instrument is blown by hand, the "pumper" is paid two shillings and six pence per month.
During the following decades, periodic repairs are made to the instrument. In 1864, the first major repairs to the organ are carried out by a Mr. Woodbridge, of Albany (New York) apparently a travelling organ builder and technician. A later campaign to repair the instrument is more throrough, virtually rebuilding it in 1874.
In 1884, a new organ (installed in the old organcase) is placed to the north of the chancel. The work is commissionned to the Lye & Son firm, of Toronto, for the amount of $1,380. This firm would be called upon maintain the instrument in good order during the next three decades.
In 1905, the Vestry decides that time has arrived when some renovation work on the organ has become necessary, and also recommands that some additions be made to meet the more modern requirements of organ playing. The proposed improvements, estimated at $500 are entrusted to Lye & Sons. Four new stops are installed: Cornopean 8' (Swell), Doppel Flute 8' (Great), Viol d'Amour 8' (Choir) and Lieblich Gedackt 16'(Pedal). At the same time, a composition pedal is installed to the Great and two to the Swell; the pedalboard is made concave; an Octave coupler to the Swell, a Sub-octave Choir to Great coupler. The present swell box is enlarged and a balanced swell pedal is added.
In 1915, Casavant Frères, of St. Hyacinthe, were commissionned to build a new large organ (electro-pneumatic action, three 61-note manuals, 30-note pedalboard, 36 stops, 39 ranks, 18 couplers). This new instrument took up space to both the north and south of the chancel and set the pattern that later rebuildings would follow. It was inaugurated on January 26th, 1916 par F.A. Moure.
In 1956, the Schlicker Organ Company, of Buffalo (New York) rebuilt the organ in the baroque style, at the cost of about $60,000, salvaging as much of the Casavant instrument as possible. It was inaugurated on February 27th 1957 by Catherine Palmer.
In 1990, a new console was built by Thomas Linken, of Toronto. A twelve rank electric slider chest was also added. The instrument has 51 stops and 58 ranks.
In 2008, when the Deer Park United Church congregation decided to move out of its building, the organ became available. Purchasing, installation and renovations costs are estimated at $200,000. The instrument is installed in the north transept where the very first organ sat and takes up most of the space in the transept.
Organ at Deer Park United Church
The dedication of Deer Park Presbyterian Church in February 1913 represented the third church building and the second location for a congregation which first met for worship in 1882. When the congregation became part of The United Church of Canada at the time of union in 1925, some members chose to remain true to their Calvinistic roots, and established Calvin Presbyterian just a few city blocks to the north.
For approximately 18 years, the original 1913 Casavant organ, Opus 508, was located behind a pipe screen across the chancel's rear wall. In front of the organ were terraced risers for the choir, and, at the alignment of the transepts, a centrally placed pulpit.
In 1931, major renovations created a divided choir and moved the organ into two Gothic-styled cases mounted on the side walls of the chancel area. In this arrangement, a new massive pulpit was provided to the east side, and to the west side a wrought iron lectern.
In 1944, the collapse of a portion of the ceiling necessitated a total redecoration of the sanctuary. It was this remodelling which added an exaggerated chancel arch which effectively hid the organ, and two additional stained glass windows were added to either side of the principal south window.
When the matter of a new organ was raised in the 1960s, the issue of placement was not easily resolved. The two acoustically preferred, axially placed locations, either at the front of the church or on the rear gallery, were equally problematic. The design proposal for the rear location greatly reduced the church seating capacity and was opposed by some members of the congregation. The proposal for a new instrument in the chancel area determined that the confined space, due to the presence of the three large windows across the south wall, would greatly limit the organ. A design for an asymmetrical case on the left side of the chancel was drawn but not accepted. The compromise solution was to place the new organ in the east transept and leaving the choir in the chancel area. This location required that the church's "Soldier's Memorial Window" be relocated to a window opening at the rear of the gallery.
Funds for moving the window, for installing steel supports below the floor, and for the organ itself were provided by Charles C. Rathgeb in memory of his wife, Eileen Elizabeth, who died in September 1967. Mr. Rathgeb himself died in 1969 before the organ was completed. His son, Charles C. Rathgeb, requested that the organ be dedicated to both his parents.
